During the two last decades, Tunisia has witnessed a remarkable change in terms of economic and social development thanks to an effective social policy which has helped reduce the poverty rate and some social, economic and human development indicators. The National Solidarity Fund, a mechanism providing support to government policies and efforts, has contributed through its various projects to a comprehensive development involving the different regions of the country, the development of poverty-stricken areas and improving their living conditions as reflected by the main indicators below:

The rate of connection to potable water supply networks in rural areas increased from 60.6% in 1994 to 93.5% in 2008. It is expected that this rate will reach 95.0% in 2009.

The rural electrification rate reached 98.8% in 2008 compared to 66.3% in 1994. It is expected that this rate will reach 98.9% in 2009. |

Although the enrollment of children aged 6 years in schools has significantly increased nationally (99.1% in 2007), the FSN intervened to strengthen the network of schools and colleges in rural areas, build classrooms and schools, extend and asphalt local roads develop basic public amenities and therefore help young people access schools. These projects helped improve the schooling rates in some areas and reduced the rate of school drop out particularly among girls. |

Since 2007, the FSN has equally contributed to qualitative improvements of living conditions in working class neighborhoods found in the outskirts of large cities thanks to projects aimed at developing and improving public amenities and infrastructure, dynamic activities, improving employment opportunities and the quality of life in general. |
